Every leader will have challenges because its not always easy to work
through others to get the result he need.
Depending who, what, where and why they are leading this is a very
generic question that can have tons of answers that all can be right or all can
be wrong.
Every medium has its own challenges though most common is how to lead a
team that is very diverse and get them to work as one unit in harmony and being
productive.
Ø We will mention some of that challenges which generally affect the
leadership:
I.
Failure to communicate; The
complexity of today’s business world requires leaders to be able to communicate
on multiple levels. They have to create the vision and persuade their team to
make it their vision too. they have to connect on an individual level and
inspire people to move from “I” to “we.” And they have to build trust by
ensuring their verbal communication and their non-verbal actions reinforce each
other.
II.
Lack of clear vision; What is your
company’s vision? If I walk into your building and ask three people, can they
articulate your vision? Can they describe what the vision means to them and how
the work they do supports the vision and brings meaning to their work? Real leaders create a compelling vision for
the future that ignites a fire under their team and keeps them working hard and
doing the right thing even when nobody’s looking.
III.
Poor execution; There are
reasons leaders fail to execute. First, they don’t follow their own plan with
discipline. Second, they fail to keep score on what matters. Third, they don’t
have the right people in the right jobs to make it happen. If you can assemble
these three puzzle pieces, you can put your company on track to win.
IV.
Fear of firing; it is a hard-human
decision especially in our Arabic mindset but a leader you must keep your team
in a healthy environment so some time to take that decision to a void the bad
apple effect.
V.
Lack of reasonability;
If we
notice that the big things are not getting done and good ideas fall through the
cracks, we lack responsibilities. We all need scoreboards that track the
results we want. leaders know this, but putting this system into place requires
self-discipline and focus.
VI.
Over control; Many leaders
lack the ability to truly delegate effectively. This creates a culture of
micromanagement that stifles independent thinking, crushes creativity, and
leaves leaders too focused on the short-term. They may practice small-picture
thinking when, as their organization’s thought leaders, they should be going
big.
VII.
Lack of Problem-Solving and
Negotiation Skills; Problem-solving and negotiation are essential skills
that leaders, teams, and individuals should master regardless of the sector,
type or size of their organization. However, these skills are not typically
taught in a way that enables true understanding, successful application, and
positive outcomes.
VIII.
Managing Stakeholders; the challenge
of managing relationships, politics, and image. These leadership challenges
include gaining managerial support, managing up, and getting buy-in from other
departments, groups, or individuals.
IX.
Organizations are getting more and more technologically
oriented and speed of technological change is getting ever faster. Preparing
the work force to accept technological changes is a major challenge.
Ø The Impact of These Challenges:
i.
Micromanaging: Micromanaging can denote a lack of trust in
your people and can backfire.
ii.
Fail to Support: The opposite
is that you pull back and don’t give your team the support they need to
succeed.
iii.
Unable to Make Decisions: For some, the
frustration of those challenges can lead to inertia and a lack of being able to
pull the trigger. A leader that can’t decide is not a true leader.
iv.
Avoid Hard Conversations: Then there
are those who avoid confrontation and don’t start the difficult, but necessary,
conversations needed to get things back on track.
v.
Get Defensive: Some leaders
get defensive. They take out their frustrations on others and refuse to listen
objectively to constructive criticism.
v
How to Adjust
and Overcome Challenges:
ü
Related to
the leader himself:
i.
Be a good listener.
ii.
Ask questions.
iii.
Do not argue.
iv.
Make sure you understand and
be understood.
v.
Gather additional information.
vi.
Explain your decisions.
vii.
Thank the team members.
ü
Related to
the company and his team:
i.
Set goals; Be proactive
in setting goals, as well as establishing the timelines — and deadlines —
necessary to keep yourself and your teams on track. The distractions that you
face can make it easy to lose sight of long-term and even short-term goals. You
can easily get sucked into dealing with urgent issues that arise unexpectedly
rather than staying focused on producing the outcomes that matter most to your
organization.
ii.
Delegate more; You’ll be
more productive tackling leadership challenges, and you’ll empower your colleagues
to take more ownership if you delegate. Effective delegation requires more than
just getting a task off your desk.
iii.
Maximize your unique value; Prioritize by
focusing on doing the most important tasks that only you can do. There will
always be more things competing for your attention than you have time and
energy to do. Prioritize the most important tasks that only you can do, and
delegate everything else.
iv.
Get role clarity; Understand
what the core responsibilities are for your role, and what are secondary
responsibilities, or even work that belongs to someone else.
v.
Create a Development Plan;
Know
your strengths, but also identify your weaknesses. That way you can make a
comprehensive development plan.
vi.
Role Play; This is a
good technique for working through issues and finding solutions that might
otherwise have been hidden.
vii.
Deal with conflict in the
workplace as swiftly as you can. Workplace conflict, whether it
is between you and someone else or between two employees, can make the work environment
an uncomfortable place for all. Talk to each party in a calm manner, working
out a way to resolve the problem.
